Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland and serves as the state's major cultural and industrial center. Baltimore Harbor is one of the best protected deepwater seaports in the world, with the Delmarva Peninsula shielding the area from most hurricanes and tropical storms, and the Appalachian Mountains protecting the city from much of the winter cold that would freeze the harbor. Mayor Dixon and the AFRO-American Newspaper Announce Finalists for Clean-Green Block Award |
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 13, 2008
Mayor Dixon and the AFRO-American Newspaper Announce Finalists for Clean-Green Block Award
Baltimore, MD (August 13, 2008) – Mayor Sheila Dixon announced the winner and three finalists in the AFRO Clean Green Block of Year contest. The contest, which was started in 1934 by Mrs. Frances L. Murphy, is the nation’s oldest existing environmental program to promote cleaning, greening, and sustaining projects in Baltimore neighborhoods.
“Collaborating to beautify our neighborhoods is crucial if we want to make our city and planet cleaner and greener for future generations,” said Mayor Dixon. “I want to thank all of the neighborhoods and neighbors who got involved in this effort. Every contribution you make promotes our environment and our civic pride.”
This year, the Afro Clean Green Block Competition was re-launched as a partnership between the Baltimore AFRO-American Newspaper and the Mayor’s Initiative for a CleanerGreener Baltimore. With the theme, “Don’t Hide the Pride and Make A Difference,” neighborhoods are challenged to clean, green, unify and beautify their block.
The overall winner was the 4500 block of The Strand, which is part of the Park Lane Neighborhood Association. They will receive a sign designating their community as the contest winners, enough large planters with flowers for both sides of the street, a visit from Mayor Dixon on “Neighborhood Appreciation Day,” a subscription to the Baltimore Afro-American Newspaper, a block party and other gifts sponsored by Cleaner Greener Initiative partners. |

Mayor Dixon Announces First Innovation Bank Award Winner |
August 13, 2008
Baltimore, MD (August 13, 2008) – Mayor Sheila Dixon was joined by cabinet members and city employees to announce the first winner of the Innovation Bank award. The Mayor created the award to encourage city employees to share their ideas for improving government operations in a constructive and consistent manner.
“As City employees, we have a responsibility to do the people’s work ethically, efficiently, and innovatively,” said Mayor Dixon. “Citizens need and deserve all that we can deliver. If we can do things better or more cost effectively, we owe it to our true employers — the people of Baltimore — to do so.”
Beginning this May, city employees were asked to submit their ideas for organizational improvement to the Innovation Bank Committee, which will reviewe each idea. The Committee will announce awards quarterly and annual awards for the best submissions. Replacing the “Employee Suggestion Program,” the Innovation Bank will provide an additional incentive to City workers and City agencies to generate creative and divergent thinking to increase revenues, decrease costs, or improve service. The goal is to make Baltimore City government more effective, efficient and customer friendly.
The Innovation Bank Committee will authorize cash awards for winning ideas. For projects that increase revenue or decrease costs, the award will be 1% of the anticipated savings or increased revenue, up to a maximum of $5,000. For projects that improve service quality, prizes of $500 will be awarded. The agency benefiting from the new idea can also apply to receive a portion of the savings in their budget. |
