Welcome to Baltimore
Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland and serves as the state's major cultural and industrial center. Baltimore Harbor is one of the best protected deepwater seaports in the world, with the Delmarva Peninsula shielding the area from most hurricanes and tropical storms, and the Appalachian Mountains protecting the city from much of the winter cold that would freeze the harbor. Mayor Sheila Dixon Announces Targets for 2010 City Budget
Outlines cost-cutting measures required to address budget gap.

Baltimore, MD (November 14, 2008) – Mayor Sheila Dixon announced the proactive steps being taken by the city to address a projected shortfall in the budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2010. The Mayor has asked department and agency directors to review their budgets to identify all available cost-savings measures.

“The bottom line, as we see it today, is a $65 million gap between revenues and the costs of maintaining current services for the fiscal year starting next July,” said Mayor Dixon. “I am committed to crafting a responsible budget plan that mitigates impacts on essential City services and on my priorities for a cleaner, greener, safer and healthier Baltimore.” The Mayor is not scheduled to present her proposed budget to the Board of Estimates until March. She has charged the heads of city departments and agencies to complete a thorough review of their proposed budget, and to submit plans to close the gap in the budget.

Mayor Dixon and Central Baltimore Community Announce Charles North Vision Plan

Baltimore, MD (October 30, 2008) – Mayor Sheila Dixon and the Central Baltimore Partnership unveiled a multi-phased development initiative for the Charles North community; Baltimore’s crossroads of residential, retail, artist galleries and transit to be anchored with four unique zones.

The Charles North Vision Plan incorporates input from a broad spectrum of community members – public, private, institutional and community. This plan leverages an already existing surge in artist and small business incubators with a common development strategy focused on stimulating private sector investment in small business while substantially increasing residential density.

“The Charles North Vision Plan is the result of a strong partnership between the residents, business and the cultural community,” said Baltimore City Mayor Sheila Dixon. “By coming together, we will build on the momentum that has already been taking place throughout the community, and help built a stronger and more sustainable neighborhood for everyone.”

Central Baltimore is a collection of some of Baltimore’s most historic neighborhoods, situated between the rapidly developing Charles Village to the north, and Midtown-Mount Vernon to the south. The area overlooks the Jones Falls River Valley, is culturally and ethnically diverse, and ready for rebirth and sustainable growth.
